A New Beginning in Coventry

In the years following the Second World War Coventry emerged as a city of restoration, resilience and new opportunity. During the late 1950s a season of rebuilding transformed the city into a thriving centre for industry and employment. Many people arrived in Coventry seeking new beginnings, guided by hope and a desire to build meaningful lives, rooted in faith and purpose.

Among them was Sister Iona Taffe, who sought not only work but a place to worship the one true and living God. Despite her prayers and efforts, finding a welcoming place of worship in Coventry proved challenging. Yet, strengthened by faith and unwavering trust in God’s guidance, Sister Taffe persevered, believing that the Lord would open the way and establish His work in Coventry.

The Birth of a Fellowship

Determined to find spiritual fellowship, Sister Taffe reached out to her pastor in Jamaica for guidance. Her pastor, upon learning of her situation, connected with Bishop S.A. Dunn in Birmingham, informing him of believers in Coventry in need of support. By 1962, Sister Taffe and five other faithful saints began gathering for weekly prayer meetings in a humble bedroom at 95 Stanley Road, Earlsdon.

Recognising their devotion, Bishop Dunn sent Elder Dudley Nicely, an emerging minister, to assist them in 1965. Elder Nicely embraced the call, traveling twice a week from Birmingham to Coventry, often accompanied by brethren from his own congregation. Together, they nurtured a small but growing community of believers, united in their commitment to worship and fellowship.

Growth and Establishment

As the congregation flourished, the modest space on Stanley Road could no longer accommodate them. They moved to a rented school hall in Red Lane, where they continued to worship and grow in faith. Three years later, through God’s grace and the generosity of the saints, they purchased Bird Grove House at 9 George Eliot Road a property rich in history as the former residence of the renowned author George Eliot.

Transforming Bird Grove House into a place of worship was both a challenge and a labor of love. The brethren worked tirelessly, driven by their faith and community spirit. It was here that they experienced God’s mighty works first hand. Souls were added to the church, lives were transformed, and the congregation became a beacon of hope in Coventry. For many of our longstanding members, these memories hold a special place in their hearts.

Faithful Leadership

For approximately thirty years, Elder Nicely and his wife, Mother Nicely, served the Coventry assembly with unwavering dedication. Elder Nicely was passionate about spreading the Apostolic doctrine, not only locally but also by visiting other assemblies. His leadership strengthened the church’s foundation and expanded its reach.

After Elder Nicely was called home to be with the Lord, Elder Dewitt George Jones was appointed to lead the brethren in Coventry. His guidance continued the legacy of faithful service. Evangelist Vera Kelly, who had been a member since 1964, was appointed as his assistant, demonstrating the church’s commitment to nurturing leadership from within its own community.

Forward Still

The decision was made to sell the premises at George Eliot Road, and the congregation temporarily held services at St. Paul’s Church Hall. In 2005, a new chapter began with the purchase of the current building at 68 Station Street West. After extensive renovations, the doors opened for worship in 2007, marking a significant milestone for the church.

Following the passing of Elder Jones in 2008, Evangelist Kelly was ordained as Pastor, with Minister Hugh Nicely serving as her assistant. Together, they remained steadfast in their mission to build upon the strong foundations laid by the founding brethren. Their leadership emphasized community outreach and a commitment to spiritual growth.

Embracing the Future with Vision

In March 2020, the church mourned the loss of Pastor Kelly, who was called home to be with the Lord.

During this transitional period, Overseer Andrew Landell, with assistance from Senior Pastor Bancroft Campbell, provided interim leadership. In October 2020, Elder Andrae Codner and Minister Kamesha Codner were appointed as the lead officers. Their vision is to make Bethel New Life Apostolic Church a model church—extraordinary and led by the Holy Spirit.

Under their guidance, the church continues to thrive, embracing its mission to “Advance the teachings of the Apostolic Christian doctrine in alignment with the Christian Faith.” With a renewed commitment to community, faith, and inclusivity, we look forward to the future with hope and anticipation, trusting in God’s plan for our church and the wider community.
